What Are Bourbon Baked Beans?

Bourbon baked beans are a delicious twist on the traditional baked beans recipe. They are made by enhancing the beans with bourbon, bacon, and a combination of savory seasonings. The beans develop a slightly sweet, rich, and smoky taste that pairs perfectly with a range of main dishes. Usually slow-cooked to meld the flavors, this variation on baked beans offers a unique touch that stands out on any dinner table.

Why Add Bourbon to Baked Beans?

Bourbon introduces a depth of flavor that complements the beans beautifully. Its caramel and vanilla notes enhance the natural sweetness of the beans while adding a subtle smokiness. The alcohol evaporates during cooking, leaving behind a rich and complex taste that adds to the overall experience. Bourbon transforms this humble side dish into a gourmet treat, providing a unique layer of flavor you can’t easily replicate with other ingredients.

How to Make Bourbon Baked Beans in a Slow Cooker

Making bourbon baked beans in a slow cooker is both simple and rewarding. Start by combining soaked and drained beans with bourbon, crispy bacon, onions, and various seasonings. Cook on low for 8-10 hours. The slow-cooking method ensures the beans absorb all the flavors while becoming tender. This method also allows the ingredients to harmonize, resulting in a dish that’s rich in taste and perfectly cooked.

Key Ingredients for Bourbon Baked Beans

To create this flavorful side dish, you’ll need these essential ingredients:

  • Beans: Navy or Northern beans are ideal for their mild flavor and tender texture.
  • Bacon: Provides a smoky richness and adds a crispy texture.
  • Bourbon: Infuses a deep, caramelized flavor into the beans.
  • Onion: Adds a layer of savory sweetness.
  • Sweeteners: Brown sugar and molasses enhance the natural sweetness of the beans.
  • Seasonings: Mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and BBQ sauce add tang and complexity.

The Role of Bacon in Bourbon-Baked Beans

Bacon is key in this dish, contributing both flavor and texture. The rendered bacon fat adds richness to the sauce, while the crispy bacon itself offers a delightful contrast to the soft beans. For the best results, cook the bacon until crispy before adding it to the slow cooker. This prevents the bacon from becoming soggy and ensures its flavor fully infuses the beans, balancing the sweetness of the bourbon and sugar.

Tips for Perfectly Tender Beans

  • Soak the Beans: Soaking beans overnight softens them and reduces the cooking time. This also helps them maintain their shape without becoming mushy.
  • Drain and Rinse: Rinse the soaked beans thoroughly to remove excess starch, which can make the dish overly thick.
  • Cook Slowly: The low-and-slow cooking method allows the beans to absorb the rich flavors of the bourbon and bacon, creating a more intense, satisfying taste.

Customizing Your Bourbon Baked Beans

Feel free to tailor this recipe to suit your taste preferences. Add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper for a spicier version. If you prefer a sweeter profile, increase the brown sugar or add maple syrup. You can also experiment with spices like smoked paprika or garlic powder to deepen the flavor. Different types of bacon, such as applewood-smoked or peppered bacon, can add even more complexity.

Serving Ideas for Bourbon Baked Beans

Bourbon baked beans are versatile and complement a variety of main dishes. For a BBQ-inspired meal, serve them with grilled burgers, ribs, or roasted chicken. They also go well with pork chops, cornbread, or even over rice for a hearty, comforting side. The smoky and rich flavors of the beans can enhance almost any meal, making them a memorable addition to your menu.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 (12 fl oz) can caffeinated pepper-type soda (such as Dr Pepper)
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slices bacon
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup bourbon
  • 2 (16 ounces) cans of baked beans

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Mix brown sugar, paprika, mustard, and cayenne pepper in a bowl. Whisk in pepper soda, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce until brown sugar is dissolved.
  3. Cut 4 slices of bacon into small strips. Cook and stir in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until almost crispy, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, reserving bacon grease.
  4. Stir onion into the bacon grease in the Dutch oven; cook and stir until soft, 3 to 5 minutes. Add garlic; cook and stir for 1 minute. Pour in bourbon, stirring to scrape up browned bits off the bottom with a wooden spoon. Stir bacon strips back in.
  5. Pour the brown sugar mixture and baked beans into the Dutch oven. Simmer until beans are heated through, about 15 minutes. Arrange the remaining 4 slices of bacon on top of the beans.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven, covered, until beans are bubbly and sauce is syrupy, about 2½ to 3 hours.
